Selfie at Sunflower Fest - Dogwood Farm

You do not have to be in Kansas to enjoy images of sunflowers.  Last Saturday I went to a Sunflower Fest in Belews Creek NC.  It was a great photo opportunity and you could also pick flowers to take home for a cost of $1.00/stem.  It was a bright sunny day. I went with my photo friend,  Pat Chamings.  We got there about 9:15 a.m. I took the opportunity to crouch down and take a selfie with my iPhone.  The photo on the left I crouched low to get the sunflowers being backlit. I took more photos with my Panasonic camera.  No variety of cultivars and all these were about 2 ft tall. Images were cropped to post to Facebook.   
There are lots of other varieties of the Hellianthis but these were all the low growing variety with yellow centers.  There were lots of bees and butterflies around.   Check out varieties at you local nursery or buy seeds online.  The Mexican ones have different petal formation and are quite orange.

(Cleodendrum trichotomum, Peanut Plant, Harlequin Glorybower)  This a very unusual floweing shrub.  I was at the Greensboro Arboretum when this shrub happened to be have the fruit which has very unusual colors.  I have included below the website for more information and a picture of the shrub with white flowers in the summer. Fringe Tree (Shrub) and Altered Art

Image on left is a Fringe Tree/Shrub (Chionanthus virgini.cus).   It blooms in the spring.  I love the texture of this plant. I did  adjust highlights & shadows. For the image on the right I used the invert filter in PSE 15 to make this abstract design. Because the original colors were green and white, this changed to purple and black.  Looks like something a painter might have painted but only took a few minutes with a press of the mouse to change.  Will use this for camera club presentation in May: "Inspired by Trees & Shrubs" as well post to Facebook or Instagram.

Bromeliads & Macro Poinsettia

In December in NC there are not as many opportunites to photograph flora.  The image on the left was taken at Lowe's in the indoor plant section   Bromeliads are a plant that needs to be a house plant in the winter months for our plant zone.  I went to a poinsettia open house in King, NC, and took pictures of a lot of varieties of poinsettias.  The image on the right I intentionally wanted to capture the center flowers as a macro. The  modified colored leaves are actually bracts. Green leaves are below the bracts.  Images taken with my iPhone XR - no post editing. With indoor lighting you can not always get the best light.
